Historical Background

The ACK Diocese of Bondo is one of the Dioceses in the Anglican province of Kenya and forms part of the world wide fellowship of Anglicans in the Anglican Communion. (Just a point to note: There is also a Catholic Diocese of Bondo in the DRC) The Anglican Diocese of Bondo is a significant milestone and a pointer of the growth and development of the

Anglican Mission in Kenya over the last 176 years from the humble inception at the Kenyan coast by Johann Ludwig Krapf a Church Missionary Society (CMS) missionary in 1844.The ACK Diocese of Maseno South that was officially established in 1970 and covered the entire Province of Nyanza and parts of Rift valley Province has since given birth to five Dioceses namely: Maseno East Diocese, Southern Nyanza Diocese, Maseno West Diocese, Bondo Diocese and the new Maseno South Diocese. Curved out of the greater Maseno West Diocese in 1999, the ACK Diocese of Bondo covers Bondo and Rarieda Sub Counties in Siaya County. 

It’s first Bishop the Rt. Rev. Johannes Otieno Angela was consecrated and enthroned on 20 February 2000. The second Bishop the Rt. Rev. Prof. David Kodia was consecrated and enthroned on 4 June 2017. On 29 March 2021 ACK Diocese of Bondo made history in this region by consecrating the first Lady Bishop the Rt. Rev. Dr. Emily Onyango as an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese.

At creation in 1999 Bondo Diocese had the following 19 parishes:

Currently the Diocese of Bondo has 51 parishes. A number of these are one congregation parishes while others range from two to seven congregations within a parish. The Diocese has placed a moratorium on establishing new parishes as it keenly observe the performance of those which are extant.
